Structural Damage to Gold Coast High Rises

Vine's prophetic vision of structural damage in Queensland buildings came true in the years following her prediction.

In 2013 the Iluka Surfers Paradise high-rise building had to be demolished after concrete spalling (also known as concrete cancer) destroyed the hotel's structural integrity.

Concrete spalling begins when the steel reinforcement rods inside concrete slabs begin rusting. When the steel rusts it expands by five times causing the surrounding concrete to break up and the buildings become a public hazard, just as Vine predicted.

In 2014 and 2015 the structural integrity of dozens of Gold Coast buildings was thought to be at risk.
